Lufthansa new first class Seattle to Frankfurt trip report
/On 5th Dec 2013 I had the pleasure of flying Lufthansa's new first class cabin between Seattle back to London (via Frankfurt). Before this flight I hadn't flown a first cabin before, so why not start at the top, with one of the best airlines in the world.
My journey started at Sea-Tac Airport around 11am, in good time for my 13:55 flight. I went straight up to the first check-in desk, but I think it was a bit early for them and the attendant simply pointed to the boarding pass printing machine and told me to go there. OK...
Security was somewhat busy, and as is becoming more often these days, the priority line had more people in it than the normal line. The lady at security looked at my boarding pass and said 'first class' in the way only an African muma can.
I headed to the Club International lounge in Terminal A which Lufthansa has a contract with. They also share it with Asiana so it's not the most exclusive of lounges. There are free snacks and drinks but really nothing special food or amenities wise.
The Lufthansa agent shortly came over to introduce herself and she saw I was holding paper print out tickets. She swiftly took these away and replaced them with a much nicer boarding card. I'll be hanging onto this one for posterity.
Soon after the agent returned and escorted the small group of us to the gate and onto the aircraft. We were flying on an A330-300 aircraft recently outfitted with the new first class cabin.
There is something very special about the first class product Lufthansa has crafted. The color tones, lighting and space works together incredible well.
We settled into our seats and I had a fiddle with the seat controls. The seat is reminiscent of a throne fit for kings. The seat is very comfortable and the multitude of adjustment controls ensures that there's posture which can't be achieved. When you're ready to sleep, you hit the bed button and the seat reclines full into a bed. The ottoman at the front can also be brought forward and back for optimum foot resting.
The IFE system has a clean design, but the selection of English movies is severely limiting. I hope that this was due to the fact their first is a new product and the IFE might not be loaded with all of the movies yet.
After take-off the and some snacks, the dinner service commenced. I was very impressed with the flight attendants throughout. At one point the first manager come around an introduced herself personally to each of the passengers. Maybe a little OTT there.
The food was sublime. I usually opt for the safe options when choosing food in-flight. There's nothing worse than ending up not enjoying your only mean for 12 hours. This time I took a punt and went for the butter poached lobster. I was very impressed. Who would have thought lobster on a plane could be so good. Based on the success with the lobster, I also opted to enjoy some caviar for the first time, and as a general lover of seafood it went down a treat.
I passed the remainder of the flight with some movies on my iPad and a sleep in the insanely comfortable lie-flat seat. Just before landed I was treated to this beautiful sunrise, reflecting off the rose in front of my seat.
Thank you Lufthansa. Until next time.
